Urgent action is needed now to end avoidable sight loss, to improve the economy and opportunities for the next generation.

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda, in technical collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), will host the first ever Global Summit for Eye Health to focus on the value of vision to countries, communities and individuals.

The Summit will convene senior leaders from government, private and public sectors, NGO’s and funding institutions to help reach the 1 billion people living with avoidable sight-loss.

Five years on from the UN Resolution on Vision, the event will be an opportunity to secure a new wave of ambitious commitments and transform a shared vision into action.

The Value of Vision: The Case for Investing In Eye Health

Launched in September 2025 at the UN General Assembly, The Value of Vision: The Case for Investing In Eye Health shows the huge economic return that is possible with targeted investment.

If further investment, policy changes and the six accelerators were implemented and the 1 billion living with avoidable sight loss were reached, this would mean a $447 billion boost to the world economy annually.

Investing $7 billion USD in eye health in LMICs over 2026-2030 will deliver $199 billion USD in economic benefits, a 1:28 return on investment – one of the best in global health. Plus:

3.3 million years of schooling gained
5,800 transport deaths averted
211,000 transport injuries averted
1.7 million cases of depression averted
12,000 deaths averted
80,000 years of life gained
